Job Summary

The Transportation Supervisor is a key role within CN, responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of train services within a designated territory or terminal. Main Responsibilities
  • Safety Orientation, Understanding, Compliance and Enforcement
    • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to learn and understand CN's safety protocols and regulations
    • Coach and train unionized employees on safe work procedures and best practices
    • Conduct regular safety observations and provide feedback to subordinates
    • Ensure compliance with governing regulations and CN's operating rules
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making
    • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to learn and understand CN's internal systems and processes
    • Maintain teamwork and order amongst staff, contractors, and internal clients
    • Use operational data to identify opportunities for improvement and make informed decisions
    • Oversee crew utilization, track deadheads, and labor costs
  • Planning and Organizing Workload
    • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to understand service design and support tools
    • Work with rail traffic control to manage train line ups and train meets
    • Manage crew productivity against switching standards
    • Keep track of yard status, service commitments, and train connections
  • General Leadership and Supervision of both Union Workforce
    • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to understand CN's leadership behavior and communication expectations
    • Communicate company goals and policies to unionized employees
    • Conduct investigations and issue discipline as necessary
    • Develop and sustain employee behaviors through feedback, recognition, and coaching
Requirements
  • Industrial work experience demonstrating progression of responsibility and complexity in a safety-compliant environment
  • Experience working with heavy machinery
  • 4 years of supervisory experience - management or with unionized employees
  • 3 years of experience on railroad as conductor

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Fluently bilingual both written and verbal (English, French)
