Position Overview

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees at our facility. This position is responsible for administering and participating in various health and safety functions, conducting investigations, and supporting the Health and Safety Manager in maintaining compliance with relevant regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day health and safety operations, ensuring adherence to established protocols and procedures.
  • Identify potential hazards, analyze risks, and implement corrective actions to mitigate safety concerns.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety initiatives in accordance with provincial occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) to manage employees on modified duty and facilitate their safe return to work.
  • Lead monthly Occupational Health and Safety meetings at our facility, fostering open communication and promoting a culture of safety.
  • Assist the Health and Safety Manager during Workplace Safety Board (WSB) inspections and conduct regular internal safety audits.
  • Participate in company-wide safety audits and implement best practices to enhance overall workplace safety.
  • Conduct comprehensive on-site orientations for new hires, ensuring they understand safety protocols and procedures.
  • Oversee the completion and tracking of contractor safety agreements, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining emergency planning procedures, ensuring preparedness for various scenarios.
  • Ensure fire safety procedures comply with provincial fire codes, conducting regular inspections and training.
  • Collect, analyze, and investigate internal incident reports to identify trends and implement preventive measures.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in health and safety or a combination of education, training, and relevant work experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word. Familiarity with Google Platform is an asset.
