The Role

As a Bridge Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the planning, design, and construction of bridges and other transportation structures that are essential to our infrastructure systems. Your expertise in structural engineering principles, materials science, and project management will enable you to contribute to the safe, efficient, and sustainable development of transportation networks. From initial design concepts to final inspections, you will ensure the structural integrity, functionality, and durability of bridges while adhering to regulatory standards and project specifications.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, and attributes:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • At least 5 years of progressive design experience for public infrastructure projects involving bridge-sized culverts, steel, and concrete bridge structures in Alberta and Western Canada.
  • Proven experience with Alberta Transportation design guidelines and construction specifications.
  • Ability to lead detailed design and contract preparation in collaboration with team members and independently.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta Transportation standards and policies and the Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6).
  • Capability to provide construction liaison and serve as Contract Administrator.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and approving technical design reports.
  • Strong understanding of the scope of other disciplines and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance, including a 3-year driver abstract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop budgets and schedules, plan the work, and provide technical direction and oversight.
  • Manage project teams, oversee project budgets and schedules, and ensure quality control of deliverables.
  • Complete preliminary design and bridge planning activities and deliverables.
  • Conduct detailed structural design calculations and analyses.
  • Perform technical reviews of work produced by colleagues for quality assurance purposes.
  • Develop and review engineering designs for new bridges and bridge rehabilitation projects;
  • Generate project construction quantity and cost estimates, contract documents, and specifications.
  • Support and mentor bridge group staff in their professional development.
  • Assist leadership in expanding the bridge group and pursuing new business opportunities and clients.
  • Provide engineering expertise and services related to the design, rehabilitation, evaluation, and inspection of bridges, culverts, and other transportation structures.
  • Prepare and review cost estimates, specifications, tender documents, and reports.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineering disciplines, including highway, foundation, environmental, drainage, and electrical.
  • Provide construction administration support and conduct site inspections as needed.
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients and stakeholders.
