About Our Opportunity

The Government of Nova Scotia seeks a highly organized and resourceful Legislative Assistant to the Speaker of the House of Assembly. This role is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the Speaker's Office, ensuring that all parliamentary events are accurately recorded and that Nova Scotia participates in as many of these events as possible.

The successful candidate will provide administrative support to the Speaker in all legislative matters, including preparation of expense claims, coordinating approvals, and liaising with the Legislative Press Gallery. They will also organize visits to the House of Assembly by parliamentary delegations, make travel arrangements, and maintain a record of meetings of the Special Committee on Assembly Matters.

Additionally, the Legislative Assistant will prepare press releases and notifications to MLAs of sittings of the House of Assembly on behalf of the Speaker, and serve as liaison officer for Commonwealth Parliamentary Conferences when they are held in the Canadian Region.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in administrative support, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment. They will be proficient in current software programs, including MS Office Suite, Power Point, Outlook, and other desktop publishing applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative support to the Speaker in all legislative matters
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of parliamentary events
  • Coordinate travel arrangements and hospitality for dignitaries
  • Liaise with the Legislative Press Gallery and other stakeholders
  • Prepare press releases and notifications to MLAs
  • Serve as liaison officer for Commonwealth Parliamentary Conferences
Requirements
  • Completion of an administrative assistant/secretarial program
  • At least 5 years of related experience with various levels of government and the legislative process
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment
  • Proficiency in current software programs, including MS Office Suite, Power Point, Outlook, and other desktop publishing applications
