Position Overview:
In alignment with the guidance of the HSE Supervisor, the HSE Specialist will collaborate closely with departmental leaders to assist in safety-related administrative functions and participate in various team and safety meetings as required. This role is critical in fostering a safe work environment and requires successful completion of pre-employment assessments.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular field tours, observe worker practices, and perform comprehensive safety inspections at work sites.
- Investigate incidents and near misses, assess hazardous conditions, and execute incident causation analyses while developing and implementing corrective measures.
- Participate in toolbox discussions, pre-job planning sessions, monthly safety meetings, and weekly client and HSE team gatherings.
- Develop and facilitate toolbox talks and safety meetings to enhance awareness and compliance.
- Review and accept safety procedures and standards to ensure alignment with current Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and client requirements.
- Engage in field audits and inspections to uphold safety standards.
- Perform quality checks, manage operational documentation, and update site statistics accordingly.
- Lead the creation and review of Job Safety Analyses, ensuring updates are made as processes evolve.
- Handle general administrative tasks such as documentation management, training coordination, and data entry.
- Maintain an up-to-date understanding of current OH&S legislation, as well as federal and provincial laws, alongside company policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and revision of procedural and policy documentation as necessary.
- Encourage a workplace culture that empowers all employees to engage in HSE initiatives and proactively mitigate risks to protect personnel and the environment.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is mandatory.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of a valid ACSA (Alberta Construction Safety Association) auditor certificate is essential.
- Completion of CSTS & OSSA/CSO/BSO training is required.
- Having an NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation is advantageous.
- CRSP/CSP designation is preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook, is necessary.
- Experience in the mining sector is considered beneficial.
- Expertise in investigations and root cause analysis is essential.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including effective oral and written communication abilities.
- Ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively in various situations.
- Strong conflict resolution skills, with a collaborative approach to addressing issues impacting contracts or the organization.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking capabilities.
- Adept at identifying alternative solutions and assessing the implications of proposed actions to support organizational objectives.
This is a full-time role based at the Kearl Oil Sands site.
Work Schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off; 12-hour shifts.
