POSITION SUMMARY:

The role of the Raw Material Officer is crucial in managing the varietal selection initiatives for the organization, focusing on local trial oversight and synthesis. This position requires effective communication with procurement, processing, sales teams, and external stakeholders. Additionally, the officer will support barley procurement and malt sales by spearheading sustainability farming and low carbon initiatives.

INTERNAL COLLABORATIONS:

This position will work closely with the Procurement, Processing, and Commercial Sales teams, as well as staff from the MEG division.

EXTERNAL COLLABORATIONS:

Engagement with universities, research institutes, industry associations, breeding companies, consultants, and customers in the brewing and distilling sectors is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

VARIETAL SELECTION MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee and direct the varietal selection and monitoring program.
  • Ensure alignment between the Commercial Sales Force, Processing, and Procurement strategies regarding varietal options based on their agronomic and functional attributes.
  • Identify and project key variety market shares for open market origination and sales forecasting.
  • Manage trial data within the Fairview database, including implementation and data extraction.
  • Set strategic direction for Barley Breeding lines, overseeing their approval, management, and potential sales.
  • Evaluate and drive local trial networks and their operations as necessary.
  • Monitor, synthesize, and communicate findings from external trial networks internally.
  • Maintain relationships with business unit stakeholders and group counterparts.
  • Serve as the Functional Variety Expert for the sales and origination teams when engaging with external clients.
  • Assist local teams in the supply chain with competitive intelligence regarding barley and other field crops, considering both short- and long-term perspectives.

PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE SOURCING PRACTICES

  • Lead the implementation and certification of sustainable agriculture standards for agricultural raw materials.
  • Anticipate and position the organization for new agricultural practices, innovations, and market growth opportunities.
  • Guide the organization in global reporting efforts, providing key metrics on sustainably sourced volumes.
  • Seek and secure funding for internal projects from external sources.

DESIGN AND SUPPORT LOW CARBON FARMING INITIATIVES

  • Lead the design and management of carbon reduction strategies for raw material production.
  • Educate suppliers and farmers on carbon-related issues, ambitions, methodologies, and tools.
  • Identify and implement strategies to enhance farm participation.
  • Coordinate data collection related to carbon footprints.
  • Develop expertise and capabilities in agriculture and biodiversity.
  • Assess potential research and analysis on emerging topics.
  • Explore and evaluate solutions to position the organization as an industry leader.
  • Foster alliances and partnerships within the industry.
  • Oversee data collection and impact measurement using relevant KPIs.
  • Pursue funding opportunities for internal projects from external sources.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent the organization at industry committees, functions, and other relevant activities.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with both internal and external service providers.
  • Assist local management in providing timely data for financial reporting.
  • Act as the Functional Expert for the origination and sales teams on variety, sustainability, and low carbon topics in customer interactions.
  • Manage the program budget effectively.
  • Support crop production forecasting efforts in relevant regions.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The position demands energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to influence and find common ground.
  • Teamwork and the capacity to foster an environment of compromise and understanding among all supply chain participants are essential.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant organizational policies and procedures, as well as applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist with various office administrative tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science, Food Science, Business, or a related field is required.
  • Familiarity with quality control systems in the grain industry is essential.
  • Experience in fieldwork and trial management is preferred.
  • A strong understanding of how raw materials impact malting, brewing, and distilling processes is necessary.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and foresight.
  • High proficiency in data entry and manipulation while maintaining data accuracy.
  • Proficient in office software, particularly strong Excel skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously is essential.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as needed.
