Job Summary
The 3rd Class Power Engineer performs operational work in a central heating and cooling plant or central heating plant and reports to the Maintenance Team Leader - MTL. The successful candidate will have experience with the operating characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment including computer systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain central heating and cooling plants, including boilers, chillers, generators, and other equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, including pumps, valves, and expansion joints.
- Conduct standardized tests to determine chemical concentrations in water and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
- Start up and shut down large oil and gas fired boilers and generators, adjust controls that regulate output, and perform preventive maintenance.
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment and water samples to ensure reliable plant operation.
- Work with a variety of computer software programs to monitor and control plant equipment.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level.
- Significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems.
- General knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
- Manual dexterity to repair and overhaul operating plant and extensive distribution systems equipment.
- Written and verbal communication skills to record information and describe mechanical problems to colleagues.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
- 3rd class Power Engineer certification.
