About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Anesthesia Assistant Trainee to join our team at BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre. As an Anesthesia Assistant Trainee, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our anesthesiologists in the operating room.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation and induction of anesthesia, including preoperative checkout and calibration of the anesthetic workstation.
  • Assist with patient preparation, including pre-operative patient assessment, positioning, and invasive line setup.
  • Assist with the insertion of devices such as oro or nasogastric tubes, intravenous, and intra-arterial catheters under the supervision of the attending anesthesiologist.
  • Assist with establishing arterial lines and assist with central line, Swan Ganz, TEE placement.
  • Assist with neuraxial techniques such as epidural, spinal, and regional anesthesia.
  • Establishing, monitoring, and management of the airway, including assistance with difficult airways and topicalization.
  • Document patient data on the Anesthetic Record.
  • Assist with procedural sedation as directed, monitor intra-operative patient status, and intervene as instructed.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed pharmacological agents to maintain adequacy of anesthesia and hemodynamic stability.
  • Respond to and assist with all intraoperative crises, including Cardiac Arrest, Malignant Hyperthermia, Failed Intubation, and Hemorrhage.
  • Administer blood and blood products, including autotransfusion (Cell Saver).
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • One year of critical care experience or two years' experience in an acute care environment.
  • Active enrolment in the Certificate of Anesthesia Assistant program.
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support.
