Aecon stands as Canada's largest nuclear constructor, employing over 2000 highly skilled professionals. With a 50-year history of successfully building nuclear infrastructure, a network of 413 approved Canadian suppliers, and over 300 qualified nuclear procedures, Aecon is strategically positioned for the development and construction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Aecon Nuclear is currently engaged in critical projects at the Darlington and Bruce Power plants as part of their respective Life Extension Programs, ensuring operational capabilities for an additional 40+ years. This work encompasses the removal and replacement of essential components, including calandria tubes, pressure tubes, feeders, and steam generators, alongside technical development and construction management.

Additionally, Aecon Nuclear is pioneering the next generation of Nuclear Power in Canada, focusing on the construction plan and manufacturing details for the new SMR facility in Darlington, as well as new build CANDU reactors.

The COE Welding Engineer role is integral to the welding initiatives within the Aecon Nuclear Centre of Excellence (COE). This department is tasked with three fundamental areas critical to welding:

  1. Developing, administering, and maintaining the corporate welding program.
  2. Supporting ongoing and upcoming project activities.
  3. Conducting research and development, proposal work, and supporting business development initiatives.

Staying ahead in welding technology is essential for maintaining the high-quality standards required in the nuclear sector. Furthermore, leveraging the latest technologies will enhance our competitiveness and open new avenues for business development. The welding center of excellence operates as a self-managed entity within Aecon, providing internal welding services and contract services to external clients.

Key Responsibilities


• Supervise the technical aspects of projects and initiatives undertaken by the welding COE department.

• Assist in the development of detailed, resource-loaded schedules.

• Contribute to the troubleshooting, design, testing, and training related to various welding processes and equipment.

• Support Aecon Nuclear welding school activities and classes, both theoretical and practical.

• Monitor daily operations within the COE welding facility concerning deliverable obligations.

• Aid in contract proposal efforts and review customer-supplied technical data.

• Assist in establishing project accounting systems and monitoring project execution (cost codes, job cost processing procedures, project rules of credit).

• Generate project status reports for internal management and customers as required.

• Manage resource allocation for COE welding equipment and personnel.

Qualifications


• A degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience, particularly in mechanical, materials, mechatronics, welding, and robotics with a focus on welding.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in welding or manufacturing.

• Hands-on experience with manufacturing tools and welding is advantageous.

• Familiarity with welding principles is preferred (basics of arc welding, types of welding, etc.).

• Knowledge of robotics or similar semi-automated machinery is beneficial.

• Previous design experience with tools, fixtures, and simple rigging is a plus.

• Proficiency in producing solid models and 2D manufacturing drawings using Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent CAD software.

• Intermediate to expert proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.

• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).

• Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of management and staff.

• Commitment to continuous learning and advancement of technical knowledge.

• Detail-oriented and passionate about work.

• Valid G driver's license and access to a vehicle are required.

• A strong safety culture is essential.

• A positive attitude towards developing and testing innovative solutions for various technical welding challenges is necessary.

• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills are crucial.

• Experience with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project is an asset.

• Knowledge of Project Management and Project Controls principles is advantageous.
