About the Role

The Assembly of First Nations is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Associate Director, Rights & Governance to join our team. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play a critical role in advancing First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through policy development, public education, and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide updates and share information regarding planning, policy, funding, and events to support the Director and the organization.
  • Support the Director with employee relations concerns, performance management and development, recruitment and selection, and accommodation processes.
  • Build, develop, and maintain strong and productive networks and relationships with national, regional, and community First Nations leaders, specialists, organizations, and communities; and government officials (federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal).
  • Represent the AFN in various forums and national, regional, and local engagement sessions.
  • Support the Director to align sector activities with political priorities from the National Chief's Office and resolutions from Chiefs-in-Assembly.
  • Support the Director in the preparation of quality materials for the National Chief's Office, including PowerPoints, and assist in planning, coordinating, and participating in Chiefs-in-Assembly meetings.
  • Support the Director in planning, coordinating, and implementing the Sector's Chief Committee, Technical Committee, and/or Working Group.
  • Support the Director to advocate federal government Ministers and federal government officials for funding, policy, and legislation changes, program changes and implementation, and to influence change that positively impacts First Nations.
  • Assist in providing the National Chief's access to federal Ministers and high-level government officials.
  • Assist with planning and preparation of materials for key milestone events, such as pre-budget submissions, the annual report, and assembly reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of sector budget proposals for submission to federal government departments.
  • Assist the Director with managing and balancing the sector budget.
Requirements
  • Post-graduate degree in Policy Administration, Indigenous Studies, Political Science, or Law is preferred or a related field of study.
  • ~5 to 7 years of directly relevant senior experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing small teams is preferred.
  • ~ A minimum of 5 years of experience working with First Nations politics and policies.
  • ~ Significant knowledge and understanding of issues in First Nations communities.
  • ~ Demonstrated superior verbal and writing communication skills.
  • ~ Demonstrated successful experience working with federal, provincial, territorial, and international governments and officials.
  • ~ Demonstrated superior interpersonal & negotiation skills, management ability, leadership, teamwork, and judgement.
  • ~ Diplomacy, tact, decision-making ability, planning & organization skills.
  • ~ An ability to communicate in English is required. An ability to communicate in a First Nations Language or French is an asset.
