BACKGROUND

The BC Non-Profit Housing Association plays a pivotal role in leading and supporting its members to establish and maintain high standards of affordable housing across British Columbia. The association primarily serves non-profit housing providers, along with individuals and organizations dedicated to the cause of affordable housing. The Asset Management Department is committed to delivering Energy Management and Capital Planning services aimed at reducing operational expenses, extending the lifespan of existing housing, and expanding the housing stock to meet the increasing demand.

The Asset Management Department is seeking a qualified individual to fulfill the role of Building Energy Specialist. This full-time position is integral to the department's mission of providing essential support to the non-profit housing sector.

BCNPHA serves as the umbrella organization for non-profit housing providers in BC, offering services, educational resources, events, and advocacy to over 800 non-profit housing societies that collectively manage more than 60,000 units of affordable housing across over 2,000 locations in the province.

POSITION SUMMARY

This role encompasses technical services and project coordination focused on energy analysis and building retrofits. The specialist will guide non-profit housing societies, primarily in the Lower Mainland, through various funding programs from Provincial (BC Housing, Clean BC), Utility, and Federal sources, including initiatives for Low-Carbon Electrification, thereby supporting BCNPHA's objectives to enhance and sustain the non-profit housing sector.

Key Responsibilities

Program/Services Support:

  1. Conduct benchmarking of non-profit buildings.
  2. Collect and analyze energy data to provide insights and analysis to contracted engineers, non-profit housing societies, and other stakeholders.
  3. Ensure quality assurance, troubleshoot issues, and follow up as necessary.
  4. Assist with data imports into Energy Star Portfolio Manager and the BCNPHA database.
  5. Support sector-wide building benchmarking initiatives.
  6. Analyze data for business case development, retrofit estimates, and project feasibility assessments.
  7. Perform Energy Audits.
  8. Travel to sites or conduct virtual assessments to gather building system information, identify energy conservation opportunities, and prepare reports.
  9. Coordinate outreach and site visits across the province, including scheduling appointments, arranging accommodations, travel, and expense reporting.
  10. Guide non-profits through building retrofit projects.
  11. Manage retrofit projects for non-profit societies, collaborating with staff, board members, consultants, contractors, utility companies, and various funding agencies.
  12. Provide technical assistance to non-profit housing providers in identifying, planning, and executing capital and energy efficiency retrofits, with a focus on potential low-carbon electrification projects.

Data Management:

Assist in identifying and pursuing opportunities to enhance BCNPHA databases with relevant data.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, and Skills

  1. In-depth knowledge of energy analysis, energy conservation strategies, building systems, and construction practices is essential.
  2. Familiarity with building control systems, building envelope design, low-carbon electrification, and relevant rebate programs is highly advantageous.
  3. Post-secondary education in a related field is required.
  4. A graduate degree, such as a Master's in sustainability and planning, BCIT SEMAC certificate, UBC Masters in Clean Energy, or Douglas BERM certificate, would be beneficial.
  5. Prior experience in energy benchmarking is preferred.
  6. A solid understanding of non-profit organizations and their operations is a plus.
  7. Ability to effectively gather, analyze, and synthesize complex information.
  8. Strong problem-solving abilities, both independently and collaboratively.
  9. Adaptability to changing conditions; effective communication of changes and progress, demonstrating resourcefulness in addressing challenges.
  10. Identifying opportunities for process and quality improvement, developing innovative approaches and solutions.
  11. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ensuring timely and appropriate communication with staff and partners.
  12. Proficiency in computer applications (MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management.
  13. Experience in preparing presentations and visually representing data is essential.
  14. A valid driver's license is required.

Compensation & Working Conditions
