Position Overview:

The Excavator Operator plays a crucial role in the construction process, reporting directly to the Foreman. This position entails the proficient and safe operation of heavy machinery, particularly excavators, while executing assigned tasks to ensure that all work meets contractual standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate an excavator and other heavy machinery in accordance with established protocols.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and safety inspections on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform pre-operational checks, including cleaning, lubricating, and refilling machinery as required.
  • Collaborate with ground personnel during the excavation and installation phases of pipe laying, ensuring adherence to grade specifications.
  • Accurately excavate trenches to the designated depth and grade.
  • Manage the placement of water, storm, and sanitary sewer pipes within the excavated areas.
  • Follow the ground crew's instructions regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading tasks.
  • Efficiently cut grade to minimize excavation time and maintain production schedules.

Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily conducted outdoors, potentially in adverse weather conditions, including heat and humidity.
  • Overtime may be required based on project demands.
  • Physical capability to lift and carry weights of at least 20 pounds regularly.
  • Occasional travel for work may be necessary.

Candidate Profile:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience in construction activities.
  • A minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience operating excavators and other heavy machinery is essential.
  • Possession of a valid Ground Disturbance certificate.
  • Familiarity with road construction materials, processes, and industry standards.
  • Understanding of computerized controls and electronic systems in heavy equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 Operator's License with a clean driving record.
