Amazon's logistics operations depend on a vast network of truck drivers who facilitate the movement of inventory to fulfillment centers and ensure timely delivery of millions of packages to customers. As the demand for transportation escalates annually, particularly during peak seasons, we are developing a range of cutting-edge products aimed at accelerating growth and exploring new transportation supply avenues. This is a unique opportunity to take on a pivotal role in addressing large-scale challenges through innovative technology. Your primary focus will be on customer-centric applications, scheduling and planning systems, and managing transportation demand.
The Amazon Middle Mile Product and Tech team is in search of a technically proficient Engineering Manager to lead our initiatives. In this capacity, you will build and oversee a team of skilled engineers, taking charge of scoping and executing substantial projects from inception to completion. Key responsibilities encompass gathering business and system requirements from both internal and external stakeholders, drafting technical specifications, steering project timelines from design through to launch, and managing the production rollout. You will coordinate design and implementation efforts across various teams to devise optimal solutions. As an Engineering Manager at Amazon, you will serve as a technical authority, helping to establish technical standards and influence Amazon's overarching technical architecture and engineering methodologies. You will tackle some of Amazon's most challenging issues, creating high-quality, architecturally robust systems that align with our business objectives. Your expertise will be both deep and broad; you will be hands-on, engaging in detailed technical work as well as high-level architectural planning.
Your role will involve driving projects from start to finish, collaborating with business teams on product definitions, architecting and implementing technical solutions, and measuring their effectiveness. You will engage with and influence senior management across the organization, playing a crucial role in ensuring Amazon's continuous evolution. You will work alongside a talented group of technical professionals to develop highly scalable customer-facing systems, advocating for the customer to ensure we deliver the best possible experience on their behalf. If you are a hands-on technical leader with ambitious ideas and a drive to effect change, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
More broadly, your expectations will include:
- Ensuring the quality of system architecture and design.
- Breaking down complex problems into simple, manageable solutions.
- Comprehensively understanding system interdependencies and constraints.
- Possessing expert knowledge in performance, scalability, system architecture, and engineering best practices.
- Utilizing knowledge of internal and industry standards in design decisions.
- Conducting research and benchmarking Amazon technology against competing systems in the industry.
- Acting as a technical lead on cross-functional projects and software development teams.
- Supporting the career development of others through active mentoring on advanced technical issues and assisting managers in guiding team members' career growth.
- Contributing to the ongoing recruitment and development of technical talent, including other Amazon Principal Engineers.
- Exerting technical influence across multiple teams to enhance their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your extensive knowledge and experience.
3+ years of experience managing engineering teams
- 7+ years of direct experience within engineering teams
- 3+ years of experience in designing or architecting systems (design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
- 8+ years of experience leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the complete software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live site operations
- Experience collaborating with product or program management teams
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, articulate software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to enhance their skills and effectiveness as product software engineers
