Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant - Microbiology will play a crucial role in maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment. This includes ensuring the proper inventory of clean laboratory glassware, preparing sanitizing and cleaning agents, and supporting the Microbiology laboratory in various tasks such as autoclaving waste and preparing microbiological media.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and sort used glassware from the laboratory, preparing it for washing and cleaning.
- Ensure that all glassware is properly labeled and cleaned before restocking.
- Operate the glassware washer/dryer according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
- Maintain a constant inventory of clean glassware and cleaning supplies, ensuring that the laboratory is always well-stocked.
- Inspect glassware for cleanliness and damage, discarding any broken or heavily etched items.
- Operate the waste autoclave in a safe and compliant manner, adhering to established SOPs and GLP requirements.
- Adhere to all work-related SOPs, GLP, and compliance requirements, ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
- Stay up-to-date with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and computer software skills, actively seeking knowledge and training as required.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of relevant SOPs, WIs, and SWPs, particularly those related to safe handling of dirty glassware and reagents/waste.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, including incubators, fridges, benches, and document as per current procedures.
- Ensure that the laboratory cleaning log book and preparation of sanitizing agents are reviewed and updated regularly.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, working collaboratively with the team to meet departmental goals and objectives.
Requirements
- Education: Minimum Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good verbal and written English communication skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of GMP/GLP as applied to a laboratory setting.
- Personal computer literacy is required.
- A proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good interpersonal skills are required.
- Working and/or theoretical knowledge of automated laboratory instrumentation such as glassware washer.
- Proven organization and time management skills, as demonstrated through previous work and/or educational experience.
