Job Summary

This position provides strategic leadership and oversight for multiple research activities of BC's major clinical genomic research group, and its associated projects, which are focused on novel genome-based diagnostics for children with developmental disabilities. The group is a partnership between many associated labs, researchers, clinical departments, provincial facilities, and networks in BC and across Canada.

The position oversees the group's scientific, human resource, ethical, and financial responsibilities for a suite of projects, and fosters excellence in clinical genetic and genomic research in British Columbia. The senior manager will be integral to strategic planning, decision-making, and recommendations to further the central purpose of this clinical genomics research group.

Main ResponsibilitiesResearch Oversight

The senior manager will oversee and direct major projects associated with the research group, including the development, design, evaluation, and management of projects. They will develop detailed project plans, including setting priorities and goals, establishing project timelines, and ensuring key deliverables are in place. The senior manager will also establish a system of evaluating the partnerships' outcomes and collaborate in strategic and operational planning.

They will initiate and oversee contracts with external agencies, develop and manage protocols for all aspects of research projects, and collaborate with external units to establish and optimize mutual protocols. The senior manager will oversee research ethics board applications and renewals for the group and ensure the integrity of data across all projects.

Human Resources

The senior manager will develop strategic human resources plans across programs of research, design and implement recruitment strategies to fulfill human resources requirements, and direct work to meet the group's changing requirements. They will consult on and make staff hiring decisions in collaboration with the PI and the Department of Medical Genetics senior HR manager.

The senior manager will manage a large team that includes research genetic counsellors, research assistants, and research scientists, establishing a culture of well-being characterized by high employee engagement and exceeding the University's mandate and perspectives relating to EDI.

Financial Responsibilities

The senior manager will design and develop long-range financial and business plans, implement and monitor these plans, and provide financial forecasting for the research group. They will direct resource planning and project management for collaborative projects by Partnership core institutions and collaborators in coordination with stakeholders.

The senior manager will develop, write, and submit grant applications, proposals, and other fundraising initiatives, develop multi-million-dollar budgets for major research grants, and negotiate with funding agencies and develop final budgets, contracts, and subcontracts.

Scientific Reporting

The senior manager will oversee data collection and analysis for projects within the group and develop/supervise scientific reports and manuscripts. They will develop strategies for research dissemination that contribute to the long-term success and growth of the group.

The senior manager will present at major scientific meetings that represent the research group, maintain knowledge of emerging genomic technologies necessary to advance the group's progress in the context of international research, and initiate and maintain relationships with collaborating UBC and hospital departments, hospital foundations, and external agencies.

They will advance expertise of clinical and scientific colleagues via educational initiatives and in-service events relating to genomics, ensure all independent research under the group's umbrella follows strict clinical and ethical protocols, and serve as the representative of the research group in meetings with potential donors and foundations.

The senior manager will advise graduate students, medical students, and other trainees within and peripheral to the group in their research projects.
