Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a Nurse Practitioner
The Vascular Surgery department at Vancouver General Hospital stands as the largest facility in Western Canada, offering specialized tertiary and quaternary care for vascular surgery patients throughout the province. The unique vascular services provided at VGH include:
- Comprehensive stroke management, facilitated by the provincial stroke referral program, which directs complex stroke cases to VGH.
- A specialized program for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgeries, requiring advanced resources and surgical expertise, in collaboration with the cardiac surgery team.
- Handling complex redo or infected aortic and arterial reconstructions, which necessitate multiple surgical teams and innovative approaches, distinguishing VGH from other centers in BC.
- Management of complicated venous thrombosis cases, often requiring a collaborative approach between vascular surgery and Interventional Radiology for optimal patient outcomes.
VCH is excited to offer reimbursement for the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) costs for Nurse Practitioners who are newly hired into regular or temporary positions and have not yet completed the exam. This reimbursement is structured as a forgivable loan, waived after one year of continuous employment with VCH.
Responsibilities of the Nurse Practitioner at VCH include:
- Conducting thorough assessments of patients, including diagnosing various health conditions.
- Initiating treatment plans, managing healthcare, and prescribing medications in line with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
- Providing expert guidance to fellow healthcare professionals and working autonomously within interdisciplinary teams.
- Collaborating with patients and other healthcare providers to identify and analyze health trends impacting individuals and communities.
- Developing and executing evidence-based strategies aimed at enhancing health outcomes and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
- Engaging in peer and self-evaluation to assess service outcomes at the client and community levels.
- Taking responsibility for personal professional growth and maintaining required competencies and privileges as active medical staff.
- Reporting to an Operational Director, Professional Practice, with key responsibilities for quality assurance and patient safety within the Nurse Practitioners' Regional Department.
Required Qualifications
Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and a minimum of four years of relevant clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is mandatory.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Active registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the BCCNM.
- Four years of recent and pertinent clinical nursing experience.
- Successful completion of the OSCE is required.
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency in performing the full range of Nurse Practitioner duties.
- Ability to apply for and maintain necessary privileges as active medical staff within the VCH Regional Department of Nurse Practitioners.
- Competence in utilizing knowledge of developmental stages, behavioral sciences, and evidence-based practices for clinical diagnosis and patient management.
- Expertise in pharmacology and the ability to evaluate treatment responses effectively.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating with patients and families regarding health findings and treatment plans.
- Capability to consult and refer patients to other healthcare professionals as needed.
- Skill in critically assessing health research literature to implement best practices.
- Ability to recognize population health trends and devise prevention and health promotion strategies.
- Competence in implementing and evaluating planned changes in practice.
- Clarity in defining the specific areas of practice and client populations for which care services are provided.
- Leadership skills within a team environment.
- Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
