Mainframe Developer – Role Overview

  • Accountable for comprehensive technical design, development, and upkeep of applications on mainframe systems.
  • Design and implement programs; generate test transactions and execute tests.
  • Analyze requirements and objectives for the development and execution of application systems.
  • Review, evaluate, and modify programming systems, including coding, testing, debugging, and installation. Establish a disaster recovery strategy.
  • Maintain both online and batch applications.
  • A senior developer position is available to contribute to the delivery and advancement of this project, with future involvement in enhancement, support, and maintenance after delivery.
  • Primary responsibility includes developing detailed design specifications, creating and reviewing code, and assessing impacts on other applications.
  • The role requires close collaboration with team members to ensure consistency in coding standards and approaches, optimizing synergy and reuse opportunities.
  • Lead the technical aspects of the project from inception to deployment.
  • Engage in analysis and system design specification sessions.
  • Document design options and solutions in accordance with System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology.
  • Ensure solutions comply with development best practices and architectural principles.
  • Utilize analytical skills to address challenges and deliver effective solutions.
  • Proactively anticipate obstacles and implement strategies to address issues.
  • Actively participate in resolving issues.
  • Provide detailed development estimates to the Project Manager regarding development efforts, along with weekly status updates and budget forecasts.
  • Oversee configuration management for sub-projects within the release. Responsible for coding, testing, packaging, deployment, and support of builds as code transitions through development, system, acceptance, and production environments.
  • May lead code review sessions. Collaborate closely with the System Test Environment Management Team (STEMT) to ensure environments are fully operational and builds are deployed correctly.
  • Contribute to the development of test strategies, test plans, test cases, and testing efforts (including unit and integration testing of code).
  • Provide technical assistance to business and testing teams during testing phases.
  • Monitor defects, conduct defect triage, and facilitate resolution.
  • Manage data setup and environment preparation.
  • Mentor junior developers and facilitate knowledge transfer within the group.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is stored in the project repository and that knowledge transfer occurs to full-time staff upon contract completion.

Mainframe Developer – Required Skills

  • Proficient in mainframe MVS, COBOL, JCL Utilities, CICS, and databases such as DB2 or IMS.

Mainframe Developer – Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in a similar role is advantageous.
  • Experience in the banking sector is a plus.
  • Familiarity with SAS, REXX, or CLIST, and TRMA integration with distributed technologies.
