POSITION OVERVIEW

The Social Centre serves as a vital hub for individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges, providing opportunities for connection, wellness activities, and community engagement. This environment fosters socialization, friendship, support, and participation in various recreational and vocational pursuits. As a Community Support Worker, you will engage with participants, lead workshops, and facilitate group activities tailored to their activation, life skills, recreational, and social needs. You will also collaborate with healthcare professionals to deliver integrated support to clients utilizing the centre's services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage compassionately with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use, homelessness, and other marginalized groups, employing a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach.
  • Establish rapport, provide advocacy, and support a diverse clientele, including those actively using substances and facing significant health issues.
  • Design and implement activation, life skills, recreational, and social activities to meet participant needs, offering demonstrations as necessary.
  • Collaborate with coordinators to develop engaging activities and promote participant involvement.
  • Monitor participant interactions, reporting any unsafe conditions or behavioral changes to supervisors.
  • Utilize sound judgment and creativity to navigate unpredictable situations and emergencies.
  • Respond to fluctuating behaviors with non-violent communication and de-escalation techniques, addressing participant feedback and inquiries appropriately.
  • Guide Activity Assistants and Peer Support Workers as needed.
  • Oversee meal preparation and planning for weekly dinners, including heating food and preparing beverages and snacks.
  • Set up and maintain equipment and furnishings for activities, ensuring an inventory of materials is kept.
  • Document related records, including statistics, progress reports, and participant activity profiles.
  • Work ethically and professionally within a team, maintaining confidentiality and focusing on participant needs.
  • Refer participants to additional programs/services and provide information on available resources.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education, Training, and Experience

  • Completion of a Social Services Diploma, Activity Assistant Program, or a related field.
  • Class V BC Driver's License.
  • Certificates in CPR and First Aid.
  • Naloxone Training.
  • Valid Criminal Record Check for working with Vulnerable Populations.
  • Full COVID-19 Vaccination.
  • Ability to perform the physical, mental, and emotional duties of the position.
  • Recent, relevant experience of one year or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Understanding of current social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance misuse.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction and psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
