The role of the Donation Physician is pivotal in establishing and executing a comprehensive donation framework throughout Nova Scotia. This position acts as a key advocate for organ and tissue donation within Critical Care and Emergency Care sectors, reporting directly to the Medical Director of the Legacy of Life/Critical Care Organ Donation program.
Key Responsibilities:
The Donation Physician is tasked with providing medical oversight and promoting the organ and tissue donation initiative.
As part of the provincial donation program's leadership team, the Donation Physician collaborates closely with Critical and Emergency Care physicians to offer guidance and support to the patient care teams regarding deceased donation.
The Donation Physician is responsible for ensuring that essential communication regarding mandatory referral requirements and logistical procedures under the Human Organ and Tissue Donation Act (HOTDA) is effectively shared with hospital physicians. Working alongside the Medical Director, Provincial Medical Education Lead, Manager, and Clinical Practice Lead, the Donation Physician will facilitate the implementation of donation protocols and policies across NSHA. This role is crucial in promoting best practices and ensuring that a robust donation program is integrated into high-quality end-of-life care, thereby allowing families the opportunity to consider donation.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Donation Physician will maintain a clinical practice as an Intensivist/Internist within the Intensive Care Unit. Responsibilities include:
- Enhancing donation potential by minimizing missed opportunities and applying best practices;
- Building effective relationships with key stakeholders within the hospital and incorporating donation education into the professional development of regional centers;
- Analyzing local data to identify missed donation opportunities and areas for improvement;
- Collaborating with local leadership to develop site-specific strategies to optimize organ and tissue donation;
- Ensuring the effective execution of deceased donation policies and procedures;
- Integrating donation into end-of-life care practices;
- Identifying necessary resources to support the donation program;
- Facilitating follow-up with hospital physicians regarding deceased donation;
- Serving as a resource for hospital staff regarding donation-related inquiries;
- Coordinating with Medical Education Lead and/or Medical Director to address hospital concerns;
- Providing insights on performance metrics related to donor identification, referral, consent, and management;
- Offering support and guidance for the donation program after hours when on call;
- Collaborating with organ donation coordinators in specific cases as needed;
- Advising on the declaration and management of potential donors when requested;
- Utilizing provincial policies and standard operating procedures to guide support and advice;
- Resolving conflicts in the donation and transplantation process;
- Identifying educational opportunities for improvement;
- Assisting in the development of recommendations and policies that align with the mandate of the donation program and HOTDA.
- Must be a licensed physician or surgeon in Nova Scotia with current NS Health privileges.
- Must be an attending physician in Critical Care within the relevant zone.
- Previous experience in an Organ Donation/Procurement Organization is advantageous.
- Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and spreadsheet or database software.
This position is offered on a term basis.
Compensation is structured at a specified rate for a defined FTE.
