Research Facility Manager

The Research Facility Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility, ensuring optimal utilization of instrumentation and resources. This includes managing training and education programs, maintaining lab safety systems, and facilitating effective communication with stakeholders. The successful candidate will report to the CNBL Director and oversee the scientific and technical staff associated with the facility.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage the daily operation of the facility, including purchasing, calibration, and maintenance of equipment.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the provision of services to facility users.
- Provide professional guidance and consultation to internal and external users.
- Interpret data and develop solutions to complex research problems.
- Assist users in experimental design, selection of analytical methods, and data analysis.
- Manage billing, purchase orders, and the operating budget for the facility.
- Maintain a database of users, including safety training records and billing information.
- Acquire, analyze, and communicate data for financial planning and assessment of facility sustainability.
- Remain up-to-date with recent developments and advancements in the field.
- Interact with industrial users and clients to establish service agreements and generate revenue.
- Manage and train technical staff within the facility.
- Allocate and schedule workloads and responsibilities.
- Ensure efficient and safe work practices.
- Develop and implement training guidelines and programs for staff.
- Participate in the review and selection process for new staff hires.
- Manage the operation of scientific equipment, including interfacing with vendors.
- Oversee training of internal and external users of scientific equipment.
- Maintain, repair, and update instrumentation.
- Develop standard operating protocols and procedures for equipment operation and data analysis.
- Organize workshops, vendor showcases, scientific seminars, and training sessions.
- Communicate with researchers to attract new users and initiate projects.
- Collaborate with central Communications and University Advancement teams on fundraising and facility promotion.
- Organize outreach events and maintain social media presence.
- Develop and implement strategies for informing different audiences of the services provided.
- PhD in Science or Engineering or MSc/MEng with equivalent experience in a field of materials research.
- Minimum of 1-year experience in management.
- Extensive experience in the use, maintenance, and development of neutron beam instruments or comparable instruments.
- Experience in processing routines and software for specialized complex research equipment.
- Research experience in academic, industrial, and/or government settings.
- Experience in managing staff, budgets, and projects within a scientific environment.
