Job Title: Patrolperson

The Town of Ajax is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Patrolperson to join our team. As a key member of our Roads Operations and Maintenance department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and accessibility of our roads and infrastructure.

Job Summary:

The Patrolperson is responsible for performing various roads maintenance duties, including operating road maintenance equipment, conducting inspections, and making repairs to infrastructure. During the winter months, this position is primarily focused on performing winter patrols, monitoring weather and surface conditions, and planning winter responses.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform scheduled inspections of roadways and Town infrastructure to ensure compliance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards and the Town's level of service standards.
  • Make decisions regarding the commencement and follow-through of all winter maintenance activities, including contracted services, in accordance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards and the Town's level of service objectives.
  • Provide direction and guidance to staff regarding operational assignments, assigning and adjusting staff with snow routes, equipment, and tasks.
  • Conduct repairs to infrastructure, including pothole patching, roadside debris collection, ditching, fence repairs, roadside mowing, shoulder repair, sidewalk repair, sign maintenance, and line painting.
  • Operate small to heavy-duty construction, maintenance, and inspection equipment, including pick-up trucks, stake trucks, single-axle dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, road graders, wheel loaders, and sweepers.
  • Record, maintain, and submit accurate and detailed patrol and inspection records, as well as other supporting documents as required.
  • Provide excellent customer service by communicating in a professional and respectful manner to a variety of stakeholders in response to a wide range of matters.
Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of a Secondary School diploma or equivalent approved combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience in roadway construction or municipal roadway maintenance, including operating small to heavy-duty equipment and other equipment associated with road construction and maintenance.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience using various construction materials, techniques, processes, and practices as they relate to municipal infrastructure repair.
  • Minimum of 4 seasons of winter control experience, including patrolling, plowing, and salting roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and trails using the appropriate equipment.
  • Solid understanding of the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards, with the ability to interpret and apply these standards in the field as required.
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to adapt well to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work within a team and to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to provide a current criminal reference check satisfactory to the Town of Ajax, upon being hired.
