Reporting to the Manager of Studio Services, the Textiles Studio Class Support Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Textiles Studio Technician and students by ensuring the facilities are conducive to the department's operations. The Assistant is responsible for maintaining, monitoring, preparing, and supplying materials for students and faculty while identifying areas for enhancement. Additionally, the Assistant may conduct technical demonstrations and offer personalized technical support for student projects. This position includes a mentorship aspect, allowing the Assistant to deepen their understanding of textiles media and studio equipment maintenance under the guidance of the Textiles Studio Technician and faculty. Together with the studio staff, the Assistant is tasked with fostering a safe and supportive studio environment for students to explore textiles media and creation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate under the supervision of the Technician and Manager of Studio Services
  • Support Faculty and Technicians in preparing equipment, materials, and supplies for classes or open studios, including necessary demonstrations
  • Oversee the operations of the Textiles Studio facilities
  • Assist in the upkeep and functional operation of equipment and studio facilities
  • Implement and follow safety protocols
  • Manage equipment sign-out procedures
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a post-secondary art/design program or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with textile mediums and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues in the creative process
  • Understanding of art terminology, history, styles, and mediums
  • Proficiency in digital technology and common software applications (Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, etc.)
  • Creative problem-solver with strong troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal abilities with a proven record of customer service
  • Strong attention to detail, with the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Physical capability to handle some heavy lifting and ladder work

Employment Terms: As per the OPSEU Unit 2 Collective Agreement, Class Assistants are appointed for a duration of one (1) year, with potential for subsequent appointments up to a maximum of three (3) years.

Work Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours per week, with a schedule to be confirmed in consultation with the supervisor, which may include evening and/or weekend shifts.

Compensation: $20.96 per hour (plus 8% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act).
