About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Provincial Health Services Authority. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting our pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Pathologists: Provide support to pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration, ensuring accurate and timely results.
  • Specimen Handling: Pick up and access specimens correctly labelled, sorting and prioritizing according to established protocols, assigning accession numbers and labelling cassettes.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Load cassettes on tissue processors, change, recycle and dispose of reagents by following established procedures.
  • Slide Preparation: Label glass slides for section cutting according to established procedures.
  • Specimen Disposal: Dispose of pathology samples according to established procedures.
  • Shipment Preparation: Prepare specimens and other items for shipment by packaging, labeling, filling out requisitions to send to other laboratories as appropriate.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain laboratory equipment, such as tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, water baths and testing equipment as directed by performing duties such as cleaning and temperature recording.
  • Supply Management: Keep workstations well stocked with supplies, monitor supplies and advise supervisor when supplies need replenishing and performs related duties such as receiving, recording and storing new shipments of supplies.
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: Maintain daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Communication: Receive telephone/fax requests for information and directs requests according to established procedures.
  • Documentation: File and organize reports, requisitions, specimens, blocks and slides.
  • Workload Entry: Enter workload units in the computer system.
  • Training and Development: Demonstrate work routines to new laboratory personnel.
Requirements
  • Education: Completion of Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program plus one (1) year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ability to deal with others effectively, ability to organize work, ability to type at 25 wpm, ability to operate related equipment, physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Asset Qualifications: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
