The Senior Accounting Policy Manager plays a pivotal role within the Accounting Policy division, collaborating with various stakeholders across the organization to interpret and implement IFRS and U.S. GAAP standards. This position is essential for the development, communication, and maintenance of the corporate accounting policies at RBC. The Accounting Policy function is vital in offering guidance on intricate accounting matters through a strategic perspective. As trusted advisors, we assess and advise on the accounting implications for RBC's operations, facilitate the implementation of accounting policies, optimize transaction structures for favorable outcomes, and engage in industry advocacy on critical issues. Additionally, we contribute significantly to the narrative of RBC's financial performance through the quarterly Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), Financial Statements, and Notes to Shareholders.
You would excel in this role if you possess experience in navigating complex business challenges and analyzing financial and accounting ramifications involving diverse stakeholders. You are likely a self-motivated individual who can delve into issues thoroughly, maintain a comprehensive understanding of the business context, and communicate complex concepts effectively to senior management.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver accounting advisory services to internal stakeholders by addressing complex accounting challenges and business unit transactions, including special initiatives, while ensuring alignment with corporate accounting policies.
- Develop and uphold RBC's corporate accounting policies in compliance with IFRS and U.S. GAAP.
- Play a key role in our quarterly external reporting process by managing the preparation and delivery of essential reporting components, including reviewing and drafting specific quarterly and annual disclosures, and collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Lead or support project initiatives to ensure stakeholders across the organization comprehend the implications of new and revised accounting standards, effectively communicate these changes to affected business units and senior finance executives, and document the Accounting Policy Group's conclusions in accordance with governance requirements.
- Influence future accounting and disclosure standards by supporting advocacy efforts on accounting-related matters, including providing feedback on new Discussion Papers or Exposure Drafts from accounting and regulatory bodies.
- Collaborate with industry peers on accounting issues as necessary through industry associations.
- Engage with external and internal auditors regarding financial accounting and reporting policy matters as required.
- Participate in Auditor Independence activities in collaboration with HR and other business partners as needed.
- Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment, bringing your unique insights and curiosity to set ambitious objectives and drive process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
- Over 5 years of experience in financial services and/or accounting policy roles, with a solid technical foundation in IFRS.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, particularly in conveying information effectively to executives.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities independently while knowing when to seek assistance.
- A genuine curiosity to explore new methodologies, a willingness to challenge existing norms, and the ability to drive process enhancements and efficiencies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in acting as a change agent, facilitator, and collaborator.
Preferred Skills
- Previous experience in banking, particularly with exposure to impairment of financial instruments.
- Comprehensive understanding of financial institutions' disclosure requirements.
- Familiarity with current U.S. GAAP standards.
