Position Overview
Provincial Preschool Autism Services
The Provincial Preschool Autism Service (PPAS) is a collaborative initiative involving IWK Health, Nova Scotia Health, Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia, and Autism Nova Scotia. The service is transitioning to a needs-based model that addresses the unique requirements of children and their families.
As a clinical psychologist, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive diagnostic assessments for children suspected of having autism. This role encompasses both preschool and school-aged children, contributing to enhanced access to autism assessments throughout the province.
Psychologists will work as part of a provincial team, providing high-quality, evidence-based assessment services while collaborating with interprofessional autism intervention teams and families to offer foundational education, caregiver coaching, and care coordination.
Work Schedule
Various permanent and temporary positions are available across the province, with options for Full-Time and Part-Time work. The FTE may range from 100% to 40%, determined in collaboration with the hiring manager.
Travel is a requirement of the role to ensure equitable access to diagnostic assessments across the province.
Candidate Profile
We invite applications from individuals who are registered or eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology (NSBEP). Candidates with a Master's degree should have a minimum of three years of pediatric experience, while those with a PhD should possess at least one year of post-doctoral supervision and two years of relevant pediatric experience.
- Understanding of typical child development and neurodevelopmental variations
- Knowledge of behavioral manifestations of Autism and associated conditions
- Awareness of relevant health conditions impacting autism diagnosis
- Insight into the influence of social, familial, and environmental factors on development
- Ability to develop management plans that consider family strengths, challenges, and available resources.
Experience with standard autism assessment tools, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), is preferred. Familiarity with evidence-based autism intervention techniques is also advantageous.
Consideration may be given to Registered Master's Psychologists and PhD Psychologists without the minimum pediatric experience if no qualified candidates are available.
