Job Summary

The Personal Support Worker provides personalized support and homemaking services to clients and families within the framework of VON Canada's policies, procedures, and standards. This role involves collaborating with healthcare professionals to meet clients' needs and help them achieve an optimal level of independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess clients' or families' homes, personal situations, and care plans to identify any need for changes in the personal support care plan.
  • Contribute to the development of the personal support care plan under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Implement changes to the care plan under the guidance of the Manager for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report verbally to the immediate supervisor or Personal Support Program Manager any changes in the client's or family's personal support needs or home situation.
  • Perform personal support tasks reflecting the needs of the client and family, including light cleaning, meal preparation, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care as directed by the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor, including assistance with walking, climbing, or descending stairs, getting in and out of bed, eating, dressing, and other matters of personal hygiene.
  • Provide simple bedside care under the direction of a nurse.
  • Provide respite care to clients as required.
  • Support clients' families by providing childcare as required to allow for family relief.
  • Organize daily activities, setting priorities for personal support and other tasks under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor.
  • Complete daily call checks and other forms as required to maintain the effective and efficient operation of the personal and home support service.
  • Assess clients' patterns of communication and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with healthcare professionals regarding the management of clients' or families' homemaking, physical, and emotional needs.
Requirements
  • High school diploma.
  • Secondary school education is preferred.
  • CCA Certification is required in Nova Scotia.
  • Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable to the work being performed.
  • Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in this role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
