Job Summary

Coast Mental Health is seeking a skilled Community Mental Health Worker to join our team. As a Community Mental Health Worker, you will be responsible for providing support and advocacy services to individuals with mental health issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement daily life skills activities, including leisure, cooking, and housekeeping tasks, to engage clients and promote independence.
  • Provide community-based psycho-social rehabilitation services by identifying and supporting clients in accessing community programs and services.
  • Teach and model life skills and strategies necessary for self-care, independent living, and interaction with outside social agencies.
  • Apply effective communication strategies, such as role modeling, to establish a collaborative rapport with clients.
  • Support clients in building self-esteem and developing decision-making skills through role modeling and other techniques.
  • Assist clients in accessing formal and informal community supports, such as leisure, vocational, and educational services.
  • Observe and record clients' physical and mental health status and take necessary action.
  • Advocate for and with clients to promote their rights and dignity.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, peers, supervisors, other agencies, and relatives in a professional manner.
  • Develop individualized life skills programs with clients, involving family, friends, and community resources as needed.
  • Ensure all requirements of the QWIK process and administrative tasks are completed within allocated timeframes.
  • Use formal and informal assessment practices, such as interviews, to develop individual plans identifying clients' areas of interest and need.
  • Distribute medications safely in accordance with medication policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the implementation of program maintenance, housekeeping, and cooking tasks.
  • Report and address health and safety issues as they arise.
  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain records as required.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Community Social Service or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Recent, related experience of two years.
  • Proof of Covid-19 Full Vaccination.
  • Class 5 - BCDL.
  • Ability to provide or obtain Certificates in First Aid + CPRWHMIS Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Clearance upon hire.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of housing issues and local community resources.
  • Firm understanding of harm reduction approach and its implementation in a community-based setting.
  • Demonstrated ability in crisis de-escalation skills applied in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals who are marginalized, underserved, and at risk of homelessness or homelessness.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals living with substance misuse issues and/or untreated mental illness.
  • Understanding of a trauma-informed approach.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation practices.
  • Knowledge of program policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in relevant software.
  • Ability to work with clients living with mental illness.
  • Good understanding of issues related to meeting basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups.
  • Some knowledge of the criminal justice system.
