Position Overview:
The Chief of Community Engagement will leverage extensive organizing and advocacy experience, a deep understanding of systemic violence and justice issues, and a comprehensive perspective on racial inequities to spearhead our community mobilization efforts.
This pivotal role is responsible for guiding the Freedom Community Center's initiatives in grassroots organizing, leadership cultivation, and coalition-building. The Chief will collaborate with the Executive Director to formulate a long-term strategy aimed at empowering a survivor-centered movement for Black liberation that emphasizes transformative justice. This leader will oversee the Movement Building initiatives, including canvassing efforts, monthly Powerbuilding meetings, and leadership development programs. Additionally, the Chief will align the FCC's survivor movement with local coalitions to advance key advocacy goals identified in the strategic plan. The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record in community mobilization and a well-rounded understanding of transformational and intersectional politics, informed by critical race theory and liberative philosophies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mobilize targeted neighborhoods through outreach, canvassing, and community events to grow FCC's membership.
- Design and execute a membership decision-making framework through the PowerBuilders monthly meetings.
- Engage members in reimagining and transforming the Defund. Reenvision. Transform. campaign, focusing on political education, strategy development for public safety alternatives, and policy priorities.
- Supervise a team of community organizers to enhance their effectiveness.
- Facilitate training for members to become restorative justice practitioners within FCC's Peacemaking initiatives.
- Encourage participants in Peacemaking to join the PowerBuilders Membership.
- Lead community-based direct-action campaigns aimed at addressing public safety and justice reform.
Current Focus Areas (examples):
- Creating effective canvassing strategies for North St. Louis neighborhoods.
- Training staff in one-on-one organizing techniques with potential members.
- Facilitating discussions on alternatives to policing and their applicability in the community.
- Leading direct action initiatives.
Candidate Profile & Success Factors:
Successful candidates will demonstrate a blend of experiences and skills, including:
- A strong commitment to social justice and the mission of the organization.
- At least five years of experience in community organizing, leadership development, and policy advocacy.
- Expertise in criminal justice, violence prevention, restorative practices, trauma-informed care, and victim support.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor a team of community organizers.
- Capacity to engage with the St. Louis Black community, particularly those impacted by violence and the justice system.
- Experience in developing and implementing membership recruitment and retention strategies.
- Skill in leading direct action strategies with diverse experience levels.
- A strong foundation in abolitionist and transformative justice principles.
- Excellent people management and coaching abilities, particularly with directly impacted individuals.
- Strong relationship-building skills with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Encouragement of applications from survivors of violence, formerly incarcerated individuals, and their families.
