Job Overview

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Trails & Open Spaces Supervisor within the Parks division of Parks & Recreation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily park operations, ensuring that work activities align with established service standards;
  • Manage recruitment, training, and performance evaluations of team members;
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and mitigate associated risks;
  • Participate in Labour Relations initiatives and committees as necessary;
  • Assist in the development and management of operating and capital budgets;
  • Monitor the use of materials and equipment;
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, including cost estimates and work schedules;
  • Supervise the use of equipment within designated areas;
  • Administer collective agreements and ensure compliance with attendance and safety regulations;
  • Stay updated on relevant technology and regulations;
  • Support other sections of Parks and Recreation as needed;
  • Participate in scheduled duty rotations;
  • Be available for overtime and work outside regular hours as required.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12 with post-secondary education or equivalent training in a managerial or technical field;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license;
  • A diploma in parks management, horticulture, or a related field is advantageous;
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity is preferred;
  • Completion of the Aspiring Leaders Program is beneficial and equates to one year of leadership experience;
  • Experience in human resource management and budget oversight is a plus;
Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • Proficiency in relevant software, including Microsoft Office and budget management tools;
  • Understanding of fleet equipment management;
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations;
  • Familiarity with collective agreements and labour relations;
  • Strong understanding of traffic control manuals and safety protocols.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Applicants must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Security Clearance: Candidates may be required to undergo a security screening process.

Work Status: Permanent, full-time

Hours: 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday, with required flexibility.
