Job Title: Education Assistant - Learning Services

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Education Assistant to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). As an Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional, physical, and academic needs.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of a teacher or School Administrator, you will provide support to students with diverse needs, implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and participating in the School Based Team to plan, implement, and evaluate student progress.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement IEPs by assisting with planning, researching, adapting, and collecting materials
  • Provide direct educational classroom support to students in various classrooms
  • Participate in the School Based Team to plan, implement, and evaluate student progress
  • Collect and record student learning and behavioral data
  • Assist students during dysregulation using non-violent crisis intervention strategies
  • Monitor and support students' behavior during daily arrival, class changes, dismissal, and extracurricular activities
  • Assist school and district staff in evaluating student progress
  • Observe, monitor, and document student health, behavioral, and academic changes
  • Assist students in carrying out programs set out by District Staff
  • Use computers and specialized equipment to provide support and instruction
  • Provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to students using specialized equipment and resources
  • Provide information to staff regarding student-specific program needs
  • Dispense medications and carry out procedures as outlined in the health care plan
  • Act as an advocate for students and assist with communication
  • Advises supervisor of any unusual student comments or behavior patterns
  • Support students in developing self-esteem, personal skills, hobbies, and interests
  • Provide life skills training and support with mobility, lifts, and transfers
  • Assist with behavior support and crisis intervention
  • Monitor student work and assist with work completion
  • Transport and support students at community-based activities
  • Organize and monitor the safe arrival, departure, and emergency evacuation of students
  • Provide preventative and emergency response care for students
  • Compile information and materials for meetings with parents and school/district staff
  • Follow District Policy and Procedures related to privacy and confidentiality
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12
  • Education Assistant and Community Support Worker Certificate, or equivalent
  • One year related experience in a supervised work environment
  • Specialized relevant skills (e.g., POPARD Intro to ASD, Behaviour Support, Non-Violent Intervention, Basic Sign Language)
  • Level One First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License (where transportation of students is required)
  • Working knowledge of computer software and hardware
  • Demonstrated use of alternative communication strategies and effective behavior intervention
