About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Staff Scientist to join our team at the University of Toronto. As a Senior Staff Scientist, you will play a key role in advancing the field of AI-driven autonomous discovery and developing the materials and molecules required to address society's largest challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • SDL and Automation Development
    • Work with our community of faculty and partners to determine the required capabilities of our self-driving laboratories (SDLs) and develop plans to meet user requirements.
    • Design and develop novel instruments for automated material synthesis and characterization.
    • Develop customized hardware and software packages to build SDLs.
    • Select, procure, and install equipment required for SDLs.
  • Facility Management and Operations
    • Work with our department of Chemistry, Facilities and Operations, and research staff to ensure that our labs are fully operational.
    • Oversee the activity of laboratory technicians servicing the labs.
    • Support the selection, procurement, and installation of equipment.
    • Manage laboratory budgets.
    • Schedule and coordinate lab access.
  • Research Direction
    • Work as a co-investigator with our Principal Investigator to develop and execute research programs that leverage our SDLs and support the research objectives of our faculty and industry partners.
    • Use SDLs to synthesize and characterize large quantities of candidate molecules, calibrate theoretical models with experimental data, predict promising candidates with computational tools and machine learning algorithms, and elucidate structure-property relationships of emerging molecules, polymers, solid-state materials, formulations, etc.
    • Manage research and development projects of our industry partners when implemented in our labs.
    • Develop plans that support research collaborations and plan and estimate financial resources required for programs and/or projects.
    • Supervise the work of Staff Scientists, Software Engineers, Research Associates, and Post-doctoral Fellows.
    • Work with Product Managers to ensure research outcomes meet partner requirements.
    • Monitor and report on relevant research activity to our Academic Director and Executive Director.
    • Promote our research capacity, including delivering presentations at conferences.
    • Collaborate in the preparation and submission of research proposals to granting agencies and progress reporting.
    • Prepare manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals and steward them through the process.
  • Other
    • Support consulting services related to the application of SDLs for materials discovery for our partners.
    • Support research-focused events such as our Annual Symposium.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, life sciences, physics, engineering, robotics, computer science, or related discipline.
  • Over 10 years of experience in research and development.
  • Experience working closely with a Principal Investigator or as a Principal Investigator, or as a Project Director with responsibilities of managing, developing and executing a major research project.
  • Strong experience and expert knowledge of AI and automation.
  • Experience with the development of self-driving laboratories and overseeing the activities of a lab.
  • Experience working with industry partners and on industry-led research and development projects.
  • Strong experience presenting research at academic conferences.
  • Experience managing research staff.
  • Experience managing a laboratory budget and procuring equipment.
  • Must have a strong scholarly publication record.
  • Strong and effective communicator in oral and written English.
  • Collegial in working with team members and collaborators.
  • Ability to work independently.
