We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Lawyer to join our Asset Management team at CIBC. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance on a wide range of matters related to asset management, including the preparation of documents for clients, review of new facts and regulatory requirements, and provision of advice on how to mitigate potential legal risks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Advice - Provide business-focused legal advice in a dynamic role that includes advice on securities laws and a wide range of emerging regulatory issues of strategic importance and growing reputation for CIBC and its affiliates.

  • Leadership - Assume a leadership role in negotiating projects and strategic initiatives by providing proactive legal advice, identifying legal and reputation risk, and developing and proposing risk mitigation strategies. Stay up-to-date on the evolution of the law and legislation and jurisprudence applicable, and play a leading role in identifying and evaluating any impact that new facts may have on CIBC, or oversee these activities.

  • Judgment - Work closely with colleagues from the Legal Department, as needed, to complete complex and urgent projects. You will use a strong independent judgment, extensive legal knowledge, and a high level of professionalism to work with CIBC teams, including our senior leadership. You will foster partnerships and relationships across CIBC by facilitating open communication and anticipating client, business, and CIBC needs. As needed, you will supervise and manage the relationship with an external advisor.

  • Business Acumen - Examine, draft, and negotiate complex and sensitive legal documents. Demonstrate a strong judgment and know when to timely signal important legal and/or reputation issues. As an employee of CIBC, comply with all applicable Bank CIBC policies, standards, directives, and control requirements.

  • Relationship Building - Participate, as a team member, in various product and service development projects by providing legal and regulatory advice, identifying potential legal risks, and participating in the development of risk mitigation strategies. Establish and maintain good working relationships with designated business units by facilitating open communication and familiarizing yourself with designated business units.

Requirements

  • Professional Designation - The selected candidate must be a member of the Law Society of Ontario.

  • Experience - Demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, including experience gained in a top-tier law firm or a large corporation. Experience in providing legal services to asset management companies or pension funds would be considered an asset.

  • Entrepreneurial Mindset - Thrive when empowered to take the lead, go beyond, and deliver results.
