About the Role

Reporting to the Provincial Medical Executive Director, the Department Heads (DH) for Family Practice are collectively accountable for the administration of the Family Practice Medical staff within the Zone. This role involves strategic and operational planning, as well as service leadership in partnership with relevant administrative Department leaders. The DHs are responsible for guiding the Department of Family Practice network leads, overseeing performance management, and planning physician resources for department members.

Key Responsibilities

1. Ensure adherence to NSHA Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, including credential approvals, managing intricate applications, and addressing CPSNS restrictions.
2. Conduct regular departmental meetings and provide minutes to the Provincial Medical Executive Director.
3. Actively participate in pertinent committee meetings such as ZMAC, Clinical Affairs, Zone Council, Network Council, and LTC MAC meetings.
4. Co-lead strategic and operational planning and budgeting, collaborating with Health Services Managers and Leads.
5. Maintain service continuity through effective scheduling practices, including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
6. Monitor standards, quality, and resource utilization within the department.
7. Oversee performance management for all department members.
8. Address complaints and disciplinary actions for department members.
9. Support the medical education mandate by recruiting physicians for teaching roles, participating in the Dal Medical School Committee, and coordinating medical residents and students.
10. Engage in clinical services planning and assist in managing various clinics within the zone, advocating for the healthcare system and bridging Acute Care and Community Care.
11. Lead recruitment and retention initiatives, including identifying opportunities, managing recruitment processes, handling retirement transitions, and addressing the needs of new recruits.
12. Ensure the completion of new hire and onboarding processes, with support from the Specialty Site Lead as necessary.
13. Organize regular IMMR for the Department in collaboration with Organization Performance.
14. Participate, support, and implement the Provincial Primary Care Strategy, focusing on transformation, modernization, and addressing physician issues within the zone.
15. Engage in leadership development initiatives.
16. Perform all duties with an understanding and lens of EDIRA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation, and Accessibility) principles.

Qualifications

⦁ MD licensed in Nova Scotia and privileged with Nova Scotia Health.
⦁ Evidence of ongoing leadership training.
⦁ Community-based Family Physician with experience and a demonstrated commitment to healthcare settings where primary care is delivered directly to local populations.

Compensation

Each position is 0.5 FTE, and individual compensation will be determined based on prior experience.
