We are thrilled to announce our Locomotive Engineer Apprenticeship Program, designed to cultivate the next generation of train conductors, addressing our future workforce requirements while fulfilling our commitment to serve Canadians.

Join us as one of the seven (7) chosen candidates for our innovative apprenticeship initiative, commencing at our Montreal terminal.

Upon completing approximately 24 months of comprehensive paid training, you will be equipped to operate passenger trains to various destinations, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of VIA Rail passengers and crew with a strong emphasis on accountability to:

  • ENSURE SAFETY AT ALL TIMES:
Safety is paramount when operating passenger trains. A thorough and disciplined application of safety protocols is essential in every scenario.

You will adhere to the Railway Safety Act of Canada and the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), along with VIA Rail's specific guidelines.



  • MANAGE MULTIPLE TASKS IN A DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT:
Our locomotive engineers work at peak speeds in the industry and must maintain constant situational awareness.

Strong analytical skills, the ability to assimilate large amounts of information rapidly, and prioritization in a fast-paced setting are crucial for success in this role.



  • COLLABORATE EFFECTIVELY WITH TEAM MEMBERS:

Our Locomotive Engineers work in pairs and maintain continuous communication with crew members, rail traffic controllers, and VIA's operations control center, ensuring safe and efficient operational execution.

  • ADAPT TO PROCEDURAL CHANGES QUICKLY:
As a Locomotive Engineer, you will be required to review updates to procedures, rules, and exceptions prior to each journey.

  • EMBRACE A CUSTOMER-CENTRIC APPROACH:

Our Locomotive Engineers prioritize the well-being of passengers and crew in all tasks, from train operation to public interaction.


WHAT TO EXPECT AS A LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEER APPRENTICE:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time training
  • A rigorous training curriculum aligned with industry standards
  • A stimulating learning environment featuring ongoing assessments, simulations, coaching, and feedback
  • Extensive job shadowing and hands-on training with experienced mentors
  • The necessity to engage in independent study outside of training sessions for success
LIFESTYLE OF A LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEER:

  • Expect variable schedules and destinations
  • Travel away from home is common, with most assignments involving overnight stays
  • Stay current with operating rules through daily updates on a company-provided device

REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in vigilance-required fields is an asset
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English
  • Meet testing and selection criteria throughout the process
  • Pass background checks
  • Meet medical criteria for safety-critical roles as per the relevant guidelines
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
