Chief Estimator

Position Overview:

We are currently in search of a highly skilled, compassionate, and safety-oriented professional to join our team.

Reporting directly to the President of Buttcon East, the Chief Estimator will lead the Estimating Team through the estimation process and tender submissions. This role is vital to the success of construction projects, providing precise and thorough cost estimates, ensuring profitability, and aiding the company's business development initiatives. The position demands strong analytical capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a profound understanding of construction methodologies and industry trends.

Key Responsibilities:

Cost Estimation:

  • Guide the estimating team in crafting detailed and precise cost estimates for construction projects, encompassing labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and related expenses.
  • Examine project plans, specifications, and pertinent documents to discern project requirements and scope, addressing any discrepancies.
  • Utilize historical cost data and industry benchmarks to enhance the estimation process and maintain competitiveness.
  • Confirm site visit requirements and coordinate attendance.

Leadership and Team Development:

  • Oversee and mentor the estimating team, offering guidance and support in their daily tasks and professional growth.
  • Conduct performance assessments and identify training needs to elevate team members' skills and knowledge.
  • Encourage a collaborative and positive work atmosphere to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Bid Preparation and Submission:

  • Manage the preparation of bid proposals, ensuring timely submissions.
  • Collaborate with business development and project management teams to review bids, evaluate risks, and establish pricing strategies to secure new projects.
  • Complete pre-bid documentation and create summary sheets.
  • Handle bonding and insurance requests and submissions.

Proposal Development:

  • Draft technical narratives for Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and Requests for Qualifications (RFQs).
  • Prepare proposals for lump-sum, construction management, and design-build projects.

Cost Management and Value Engineering:

  • Collaborate with project managers and engineers to assess cost projections throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify value engineering opportunities and cost-saving measures without compromising project quality and safety.
  • Vendor and Subcontractor Relations: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and timely delivery of materials and services.

Market Insights:

  • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and construction costs to support accurate estimations and bidding strategies.
  • Analyze competitors and market dynamics to position the company effectively in the marketplace.

Risk Management:

  • Perform risk assessments for each project to identify potential cost overruns and contingencies.
  • Implement risk management strategies to mitigate potential losses and enhance profitability.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Organize plans and specifications for display and distribution on our website.
  • Prepare sub-trade request lists for estimating assistants.
  • Conduct take-offs and extend all trades, requiring a solid understanding of division scopes and estimating. Proficiency in reading and interpreting soils and designated substance reports is essential. The ability to perform cut and fill take-offs, excavation backfill, site servicing, and formwork and concrete quantity pricing is also required.
  • Attend site visits (personal vehicle required), take photographs and notes, and engage with owners/consultants.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering or Construction Management, Technical College diploma, or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of proven experience in Construction Estimating within the ICI construction sector or equivalent.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry best practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Project.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage tender submissions.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all construction aspects (technology, equipment, methods), industry practices, estimating/budgeting, scheduling, and safety requirements.
  • Gold Seal Certification is an asset.
  • LEED Accreditation is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Procore and BIM software is advantageous.
