This role is integral to our Edmonton office and reports directly to the Project Controller.
As a Project Accountant – Major Projects, you will play a vital role in ensuring the financial success of significant projects by supporting operational activities. Your primary responsibilities will include executing accounting functions and managing operational cost control for assigned projects. You will engage in comprehensive project life-cycle cost management, which encompasses the following:
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and implement the initiation of new projects.
- Manage all account-related tasks efficiently.
- Prepare client invoices and monitor billing details.
- Maintain and oversee project budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Identify and rectify cost coding discrepancies.
- Review and manage contracts with subcontractors.
- Handle and process accruals related to project expenses.
- Document financial transactions through journal entries.
- Reconcile project costs to guarantee accuracy.
- Assist in processing change orders as needed.
- Gather and organize data for both internal and external audits.
- Support the Project Controller in the weekly, monthly, and quarterly review and closure of project costs.
- Contribute to the analysis of project profitability and performance metrics.
- Participate in financial forecasting activities.
- Engage in special projects and utilize Excel for various analyses.
- Provide assistance and oversight for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions as required.
- Manage the closeout procedures for completed projects.
- Ensure compliance with established systems and processes.
- Facilitate month-end cost accrual meetings with project managers, buyers, and receivers to collect and input cost accrual data.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
- A background in construction is preferred and considered an asset.
- 3-5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Proficiency in Excel is essential.
- Familiarity with JD Edwards or SAP is advantageous.
- Experience in cost control or project control is also beneficial.

- Attention to detail and strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Exhibits a positive attitude with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
- Able to perform effectively under pressure while managing multiple tasks and meeting tight deadlines.
