Overview
The Portable Plant Operator at Holcim is responsible for a variety of essential tasks, including maintaining cleanliness and organization at the plant, operating both fixed and mobile machinery for aggregate production, and performing routine maintenance and repairs. The operator will collaborate closely with management to monitor inventory levels of processed materials, parts, personal protective equipment (PPE), and hardware necessary for the efficient operation of the plant.
This role offers competitive compensation based on experience, along with a comprehensive benefits and pension plan after a probationary period. The position requires 12-hour shifts from 6 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 6 AM to 4 PM on Fridays, with the possibility of extended hours and weekend work as needed. The plant operates at various locations within the southwestern and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) regions.
Responsibilities
Safety:
- Foster a culture of safety by engaging with employees, subcontractors, and suppliers, and implementing local and regional safety initiatives aimed at achieving zero incidents.
- Uphold safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Holcim and regulatory standards.
- Maintain a safe and functional work environment, understanding processes related to near misses, accidents, and safety assessments.
Equipment Operation:
- Operate heavy machinery, including excavators and wheel loaders, for extended periods to facilitate material processing.
- Assign and complete cleanup tasks using skid steers and hand tools, ensuring safety around moving equipment while wearing appropriate PPE.
- Conduct pre-operational checks and operate mobile equipment as per training and directives.
Environmental Management:
- Ensure compliance with Holcim and regulatory environmental guidelines.
- Be vigilant about environmentally sensitive areas and address any environmental issues that arise in the work area.
Maintenance:
- Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and management in a cooperative work environment.
- Conduct daily inspections as part of the preventative maintenance program.
- Assist in the repair of malfunctioning equipment and participate in plant maintenance as required.
- Work at heights when necessary.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other tasks as assigned to support the efficient operation of the plant.
Dependability:
- Follow instructions, work collaboratively within a team, and communicate effectively with supervisors.
- Ensure timely completion of crushing campaigns while adhering to safety protocols.
- Assist in relocating the crushing plant upon completion of campaigns.
- Maintain reliable transportation to ensure punctuality at the work site.
Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations.
- Utilize all required personal protective equipment.
- Follow Holcim safety rules and report any incidents or hazards to supervisors.
- Be familiar with emergency response plans.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in industrial or mining operations is an asset.
- Heavy equipment operation experience is preferred.
- Basic welding and fitting skills are advantageous but not mandatory.
Skills:
- Training in specific mobile equipment operation.
- Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy is beneficial.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
Working Conditions:
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Indoor work in environments that may be hot, noisy, or dusty.
- Rotating shifts, including overtime and weekends as required.
- Mobility throughout the plant, including stairs and ladders.
- Regular physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Experience operating heavy machinery for extended periods.
