Responsibilities

  • Work autonomously with clients to help them reach the objectives outlined in their Individual Support Plan (ISP), providing encouragement during challenges and celebrating their achievements.
  • Oversee and assist with complex emotional, behavioral, and social needs both in residential settings and during community engagements.
  • Employ de-escalation strategies to manage difficult behaviors effectively.
  • Aid clients in acquiring essential life skills within their home environment, including tasks such as meal preparation and cleaning, ensuring a safe and supportive atmosphere.
  • Demonstrate and promote healthy interpersonal relationships while establishing clear boundaries.
  • Transport clients using your own or a company vehicle, attend appointments with them, and engage in recreational and community activities together.

*** All candidates must present a current Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check prior to employment confirmation. These checks may take up to six weeks to process, so please plan accordingly.

Qualifications

  • A Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Social Work, Disability Studies, Sociology, Healthcare Aide, PSW, Practical Nursing, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience in adult, child, and youth care, or working with individuals facing developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, or brain injuries.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be evaluated.
  • Relevant experience may include roles such as Community Support Worker, Education Assistant, Special Needs Support, Behavior Interventionist, or Youth Worker.
  • A valid BC Driver's Class 5 License with a clean driving record.
  • A dependable and safe vehicle with appropriate insurance is advantageous.
  • Experience with positive behavior support and trauma-informed care is beneficial.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI, Mandt, or CPI), and Conflict Resolution (or the ability to obtain these within the probationary period).
  • A physician's note confirming fitness for duty, including immunization records and a negative tuberculosis screening test.

Some of our community health care partners may require WJS employees to be vaccinated to access facilities while supporting individuals in service.
