About This RoleThe Mental Health and Addictions Program (MHAP) is in search of a part-time Addiction Medicine Consultant. This role involves collaboration within a new MHAP Addiction Medicine Consult Service. The position is structured at 0.2 FTE and focuses on providing evidence-based withdrawal management and comprehensive mental health and addiction care in an outpatient setting.
The Consultant will engage in consultative support via telephone for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, emergency department physicians, community pharmacists, and inpatient care physicians regarding substance use disorders. The working hours are set from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, with potential opportunities for virtual care.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Addiction Medicine Consultant will:
- Offer evidence-based clinical guidance in response to consultation requests from healthcare professionals involved in addiction care across Nova Scotia.
- Facilitate knowledge translation to enhance clinicians' capabilities in addressing patients' substance use needs.
- Evaluate and manage substance use disorders.
- Collaborate with the clinical team to initiate and oversee withdrawal management protocols.
- Assess and manage additional medical and psychiatric conditions as necessary.
- Conduct risk assessments and interventions for suicidal ideation or self-harm.
- Develop and implement care and discharge plans in partnership with clients, the clinical team, and families.
- Support transitions of care across various healthcare settings.
- Deliver trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care.
- Provide brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders.
- Maintain accurate health records in compliance with documentation policies.
- Complete necessary administrative documentation related to the service.
- Engage in development, planning, and quality improvement initiatives for the addiction medicine consult service.
- Report to the NSHA Mental Health and Addictions Physician Lead for Addiction Medicine.
The MHAP Addiction Medicine Consult Service operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Rotation among the Recovery Support Center sites will be discussed with the relevant leadership.
Qualifications- Possession of a current medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
- Current certification in addiction medicine from recognized professional organizations is required.
- Willingness to obtain active staff privileges with Nova Scotia Health Authority.
- Maintenance of liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Availability to participate in quality improvement activities for the Addiction Medicine Consult Service.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and maintaining eligibility for addiction medicine certification.
- Experience in addiction medicine across various clinical settings is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Leadership experience in clinical settings is beneficial.
- Experience in medical withdrawal management services is a plus.
- Experience working collaboratively within complex healthcare environments is an asset.
- Training and mentoring opportunities are available for those with limited or no clinical experience in this area.
