Job Description

Job Title: Railway Operations Manager

Job Summary:

The Railway Operations Manager will play a key role in ensuring the efficient movement of traffic within the road territory and yard-terminal by developing, coordinating, and ensuring the daily yard-terminal/road operating plan is completed in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate Train Movements: Coordinate all train movements within the yard and mainline through active supervision of personnel and communication across departments ensuring compliance to Local Service Operating Plan and Operating Plan.
  2. Standardize Processes: Coordinate and standardize processes related to operating plan, arrival, classification, building, inspecting, and dispatching of trains.
  3. Lead Safety and Service: Provide leadership accountability for inputs and outputs of safety, service, productivity, and financial metrics.
  4. Lead Trains and Engines: Effectively lead Trains and Engines operating employees acting as a safety leader through active observations and discussions about rule compliance and by implementing preventative measures through staff engagement.
  5. Occasional Train Operation: Occasionally operate trains; maintain certifications and licenses (Canadian Rail Operating Rules, Engineer, etc.) as per industry regulations.
  6. Crew Transportation: Assist in crew transportation to and from trains.

Requirements:

  1. Previous Railway Experience: Previous railway experience as a conductor and Locomotive engineer qualification is an asset.
  2. Supervisory Experience: 2 years' previous supervisory experience in logistics or an operational environment is preferred.
  3. Availability: Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in all weather conditions.
  4. Leadership Presence: Leadership presence with the drive and commitment to career advancement.
  5. Troubleshooting Skills: Strong troubleshooting skills; ability to drill down to understand root cause and resolve complex issues.
  6. Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing task priorities and work situations.
  7. Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions/directions including over radio).
  8. Language Skills: Read and understand safety instructions, operating rules, regulations, and other written or printed material in English.
  9. Driver's License: Valid driver's license, required.
  10. Software Skills: Proficient in MS Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
