Role Summary

Under the supervision of the Patient Care Manager or Resident Care Manager, and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is tasked with delivering nursing care to a designated group of patients/residents in accordance with established policies and the Standards of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses in British Columbia. The LPN operates as an independent practitioner while recognizing when to seek collaborative support from RNs/RPNs in cases of increased patient acuity or care that exceeds the LPN's scope.

The LPN assists patients/residents in fulfilling their physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs, aligning with the mission and values of Providence Health Care. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing care plans and conducting assessments.
  • Implementing and evaluating interventions.
  • Documenting care provided and advocating for patients/residents.
  • Participating in care conferences and assisting with the orientation of new staff and students.
  • Responding to incidents and performing clerical duties as necessary.

Qualifications and Skills

Education

Completion of a recognized Practical Nurse program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant.

Current certification in basic cardiac life support.

Responsibilities

The LPN is responsible for providing safe and respectful nursing care, which includes:

  • Conducting comprehensive assessments and monitoring patient conditions.
  • Communicating with physicians and executing verbal/written orders.
  • Documenting care in both manual and computerized systems.
  • Preparing patients for surgical and diagnostic procedures.
  • Administering medications and monitoring their effects.
  • Responding to various incidents and reporting them as per procedures.
  • Supporting the orientation of new staff and student preceptors.
  • Engaging with patients/residents and their families to identify needs and provide education.
  • Participating in care planning meetings and contributing to individualized care plans.
  • Assisting with discharge planning based on patient status and available supports.
  • Engaging in staff meetings and relevant committees to enhance patient care and nursing practices.

Vaccination Requirement

In accordance with current Public Health Orders, all employees of Providence Health Care must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and proof of vaccination status will be required.
