Position Overview

The Eating Disorder Program at McMaster Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive clinical services for children and adolescents facing eating disorders. This program encompasses outpatient, day treatment, and inpatient care, with the inpatient unit offering 8 beds and 4 day treatment slots. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, physicians, dietitians, social workers, psychologists, child life specialists, child and youth counselors, and physiotherapists, all within a family-centered care framework.

The Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of this interdisciplinary team, delivering care to young patients with complex mental health and medical challenges associated with various eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The RN will possess a robust understanding of mental health assessments, therapeutic relationship building, and the implementation of diverse therapeutic interventions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients and their families, grounded in a solid understanding of the medical and psychological aspects of eating disorders.
  • Participate in clinical rounds, lead group activities, and communicate effectively with families and caregivers.
  • Collaborate with community resources as needed and address mental health and patient safety concerns.
  • Deliver health education to patients and families regarding both medical and psychological dimensions of eating disorders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation affecting pediatric and adolescent care.

Work Schedule

Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
  • Certification in Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the Canadian Nurses Association.
  • A minimum of 3 years of recent experience in a tertiary care setting with children and adolescents facing eating disorders.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in psychosocial and physical assessments, management, and intervention planning.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act and related legislation.
  • Proficient in therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
