Job Summary:

The Research Facility Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility to ensure optimal utilization of instrumentation and resources, effective delivery of training and education, and high-quality research outcomes. This role will also manage and maintain ancillary equipment, systems, and lab safety systems. The Research Facility Manager will work closely with stakeholders to ensure effective communication and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the daily operation of the facility, including purchasing, calibration, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure provision of services to facility users.
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure compliance with relevant University safety standards.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to internal and external users.
  • Interpret data and develop solutions to complex research problems.
  • Assist users in experimental design, method selection, and data analysis.
  • Manage billing, purchase orders, and operating budgets.
  • Maintain user databases, including safety training records and project information.
  • Acquire, analyze, and communicate data for financial planning and assessment.
  • Stay up-to-date with recent developments and advancements in the field.
  • Interact with industrial users and clients to establish service agreements.
  • Participate in strategic planning of facility goals and vision.
Staff Management:
  • Manage and train technical staff within the facility.
  • Allocate and schedule workloads and responsibilities.
  • Ensure efficient and safe work practices.
  • Develop and implement training guidelines and programs.
  • Participate in the review and selection process for new staff hires.
Infrastructure Management:
  • Manage the operation of scientific equipment, including interfacing with vendors.
  • Oversee training of internal and external users of scientific equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and update instrumentation.
  • Develop standard operating protocols and procedures.
Communication and Outreach:
  • Organize workshops, seminars, and training sessions.
  • Communicate with researchers to attract new users and initiate projects.
  • Collaborate with central Communications and University Advancement teams.
  • Organize outreach events and maintain online platforms.
  • Develop and implement strategies for informing different audiences.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in Science or Engineering or MSc/MEng with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in management.
  • Extensive experience in the use, maintenance, and development of neutron beam instruments or comparable instruments.
  • Experience in processing routines and software for specialized complex research equipment.
  • Research experience in academic, industrial, and/or government settings.
  • Experience in managing staff, budgets, and projects within a scientific environment.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to plan and coordinate activities, prioritize workflow, and monitor work performance.
  • High-level interpersonal communications skills and the ability to motivate and direct staff.
  • High-level written and oral communication skills.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
  • Experience in teaching or instrumental training.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions within the position's parameters.
  • Knowledge and experience of specialized complex research instrumentation and its maintenance.
  • Knowledge of data interpretation and application to complex research problems.
  • Experience developing and implementing protocols for sample preparation.
  • Experience in developing content for online platforms.
