Job Title: International Student Advisor

Thompson Rivers University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced International Student Advisor to join our team. As an International Student Advisor, you will play a critical role in supporting the academic and personal success of international students at our university.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and support to international students on cultural adjustment, study and work visas, health and mental care, medical insurance, and other aspects related to living and studying in Canada.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with students, parents, and overseas agents to ensure a smooth transition to university life.
  • Collaborate with university departments and external stakeholders to provide referrals and support services as needed.
  • Assist with recruitment and promotional activities, educational fairs, and other marketing-related events.
  • Provide liaison, support, advice, and information between international students and their families, international, government, and community agencies, homestay families, and university departments.
  • Translate and interpret services on behalf of students, their families, and agents, as required.
  • Assist international students with registration and timetabling.
  • Monitor students' progress and address any student concerns.
  • Organize and present workshops, informational sessions, special events, including orientation, follow-up orientation, graduation, language/cultural sessions, and social events.
  • Provide immigration-related support services, including workshops and information sessions on a regular basis.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree or four years of post-secondary education.
  • A member in good standing of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA).
  • Four years' related experience, including a minimum of two years' work experience in a client-centred, multi-cultural environment and a minimum of two years' working or studying in a foreign country where the specified language is the primary language of communication.
  • Experience with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regulations and policies pertaining to international students.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Fluency in a foreign language (Vietnamese).
  • Strong cross-cultural communications skills.
  • Understanding of the Canadian post-secondary education system and environment.
  • Understanding of cultural adjustment issues.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, social media, and digital platforms.
  • Ability to perform electronic data entry.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with students, staff, and members of the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work on weekends and after hours.
