About the AVI Peer Assisted Care Team (PACT)
The AVI Peer Assisted Care Team (PACT) is a government-funded initiative designed to provide peer-assisted care and mobile crisis intervention. This program is led by individuals with lived experience alongside mental health professionals who specialize in crisis de-escalation and community care planning.
PACT represents an innovative approach to crisis intervention, prioritizing health, well-being, and community support. Our model, which is community-based and trauma-informed, has shown effectiveness in helping individuals navigate mental health and social services while minimizing reliance on emergency services.
In collaboration with K'ómoks First Nation, we are dedicated to creating a culturally safe service that respects Indigenous perspectives and supports Indigenous individuals in accessing our services.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The PACT team is responsible for delivering immediate mobile crisis support and de-escalation services to individuals aged 13 and older who are facing mental health or substance use crises. The Community Crisis Counselor will work closely with team members to provide prompt mental health crisis management, including assessments, suicide intervention, safety planning, and follow-up care.
This role is grounded in a person-centered, harm reduction, and trauma-informed approach, ensuring that the needs and autonomy of the service user are prioritized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Crisis Intervention
As an emergency response team, PACT supports individuals and their families during mental health and substance use crises. The Community Crisis Counselor is expected to:
- Exhibit cultural competency, ensuring services are sensitive to and incorporate Indigenous knowledge and healing practices.
- Be prepared to respond to crises, adjusting responses based on the severity of the situation.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and quick decision-making in high-pressure scenarios.
- Maintain effective communication with the PACT Team's Dispatch/Coordinator and supervisors.
- Engage collaboratively with other care providers while advocating for individuals in crisis.
- Develop comprehensive safety plans and ensure post-crisis follow-up care.
Situational Awareness and Safety
The PACT team operates in dynamic environments that may change rapidly. The Community Crisis Responder must:
- Utilize a trauma-informed approach when interacting with individuals who may be escalated.
- Maintain situational awareness and adapt to unpredictable working conditions.
- Conduct in-person assessments to determine the appropriate course of action.
Program Development and Accountability
The Community Crisis Counselor is expected to:
- Embrace feedback and engage in self-reflective practices.
- Practice accountability to both the community and individuals served.
- Adhere to all program policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in mental health services and crisis response.
- Undergraduate degree in a related field (counseling, social work, psychiatric nursing).
- Demonstrated crisis intervention skills and knowledge of harm reduction practices.
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Criminal record check clearance for working with vulnerable populations.

POSITION DETAILS:
- Compensation: Competitive hourly rate with potential for increases based on tenure.
- Work Schedule: Casual shifts during weekdays, subject to operational needs.
