Educational Sign Language Interpreter

Position Overview: The Educational Interpreter is essential in bridging communication gaps for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their classmates, educators, and other school staff. This role encompasses providing interpreting services, academic support, and active involvement in the educational team, ensuring that students can fully participate in their learning environment.
Work Environment: Educational Institution
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate communication by delivering expressive and voice interpreting for students in mainstream classrooms.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to offer tutoring and review services without disrupting interpreting duties.
- Assist in organizing note-taking services for students as needed.
- Engage in educational team activities, including meetings and IEP discussions, contributing insights on communication methods.
- Act as a bridge between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, faculty, and staff.
- Lead or support training sessions for students, staff, and parents about sign language, Deaf culture, and interpreting practices.
- Provide interpreting services for school events, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings as required, with prior agreement on compensation for after-hours work.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal, ensuring that interpreting remains the primary focus.
- Utilize designated preparation time for reviewing materials, collaborating with teachers, documenting data, and researching signs.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to professional standards as outlined in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and/or Oral Interpreting.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively connect with students, peers, and staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics as specified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Capability to serve as a liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing counterparts, staff, and faculty.
- Experience in leading or assisting with in-service training on sign language, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting, and consumer education.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in an educational environment.
- Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and participation in team meetings.
- Experience in tutoring and providing academic support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
