Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Canadian Wildlife Federation Full time
Your Connection to Wildlife
As one of Canada's largest not-for-profit leaders in wildlife conservation, research, and advocacy, we are seeking to fill the following position:
Lead Policy Advisor – Aquatic Ecosystems

Full-time position with a focus on enhancing fish habitat protection.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is a national not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation of our natural world and ensuring a lasting legacy of healthy wildlife and habitats.

Through raising awareness of human impacts on the environment, developing and delivering educational initiatives, conducting research, promoting sustainable resource use, and advocating for effective wildlife policies and regulations, CWF aims for a future where Canada's wildlife is preserved for generations to come.

Diversity is a fundamental part of our core values; we encourage applications from qualified candidates from all diverse communities including, but not limited to, Indigenous persons, racially visible persons, people with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+, and women in non-traditional roles.

The Lead Policy Advisor – Aquatic Ecosystems, reporting to the Senior Conservation Biologist – Freshwater Ecology, will provide policy support and strategic guidance to inform CWF's advocacy for enhancements to regulatory and management approaches utilized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada in implementing the Fisheries Act.

Key focus areas include the management of fish passage and small-scale projects.

The Lead Policy Advisor will evaluate and synthesize national and international trends and regulatory frameworks, developing recommendations for enhancements.

This role involves collaboration with a team of biologists and spatial analysts at CWF, along with external conservation partners.

Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) in English, with demonstrated professional writing experience, are essential.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic policy advice and preparing recommendations, briefing notes, reports, and statements on behalf of the organization.
  • Reviewing Canada's regulatory frameworks for aquatic barriers and small-scale projects to identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Researching, analyzing, and evaluating international fish habitat management frameworks, identifying successful models and case studies.
  • Recommending reforms and improvements to provincial and federal legislative, regulatory, policy, and implementation frameworks to enhance fish habitat protection.

Qualifications include a university degree with 3-5 years of relevant work experience in related fields (Biology, Environmental Studies, Law, or Public Policy).

Additional skills include:

  • Reviewing and analyzing laws, regulations, and government policies.
  • Conducting literature reviews and managing large datasets.
  • Writing professional papers, reports, and critical analyses.

This is a full-time contract position.

We are a growing team of forward-thinking individuals who share a common passion for the Canadian outdoors. Enjoy a friendly and casual work environment, with a newly renovated office featuring a living plant wall and kitchen lounge. We promote transparency between various levels of management and are committed to building a more diverse workforce. A variety of social events are held throughout the year.
