Position Overview
As a premier design-build engineering firm specializing in the food and beverage sector, The Dennis Group, Inc. seeks a dedicated Lead Automation Engineer. This role involves collaborating closely with our Process, Packaging, and Building Engineers to ensure our clients' production facilities are successfully started up, commissioned, and qualified.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to maintain a regular onsite presence to facilitate essential diagnostics, troubleshooting, and operational startup of production lines, equipment, and facilities. The Lead Automation Engineer will encounter various engineering challenges, applying standard engineering methodologies to design, develop, and sustain instrumentation or control systems.

Core Duties Include:

  • Designing and troubleshooting both software and hardware for control systems utilizing PLCs to integrate manufacturing systems.
  • Automating manufacturing processes through advanced instrumentation or control systems.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting network infrastructures, including Ethernet, DeviceNet, AS-i, and Profibus.
  • Developing new PLC applications, interfaces, or embedded controls.
  • Modifying existing setups and commissioning new or upgraded facilities.
  • Designing, specifying, wiring, and procuring control panel equipment, including safety circuits and I/O networks.
  • Creating functional descriptions and analysis documents for electrical equipment.
  • Understanding the sizing and placement of control and electrical panels.
  • Specifying, procuring, configuring, and troubleshooting controls hardware and field instrumentation.
  • Resolving malfunctions and recommending improvements to enhance operational efficiency and quality.
  • Creating commissioning and startup checklists.
  • Acting as the primary technical contact for clients.
  • Developing bid documentation for Electrical, Automation, and Low Voltage vendors.
  • Managing installation contractors during construction phases.
  • Researching best practices and materials in Automation & Controls.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with approximately 8-11 years of experience in:

  • Visual Basic, SQL, and MS Access database programming.
  • Designing and implementing process network infrastructures.
  • Working within an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and AutoCAD.

Travel Requirements
This position requires significant travel, with approximately 35% to 50% of the year spent at client facilities during installation, startup, commissioning, and qualification phases.

Work Environment
The role involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, as well as standing and walking during installation and commissioning activities.
