Job Title: Theatre and Stagecraft Technician

Join Douglas College as a Theatre and Stagecraft Technician and contribute to the success of our Stagecraft & Event Technology Program. As a key member of our team, you will provide technical and instructional support to students and users of the Performing Arts Facilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide instructional support to the Stagecraft program, including advising students on technical aspects of productions and supervising students during run of productions.
  • Provide technical support to the Stagecraft Program and users of the Performing Arts Facilities, including maintaining equipment, setting up and operating theatre equipment, and supervising students operating equipment.
  • Perform other related duties, including communicating with college and community users to arrange and execute technical aspects of bookings and productions, and maintaining current inventory of theatre properties and equipment.
Requirements:
  • Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).
  • Completed a Degree program in Technical Theatre at a recognized post-secondary institution or equivalent with three years' related work experience in a wide variety of technical theatre related areas or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of safety measures used in a workshop/performance setting.
  • Experience supervising students in a post-secondary environment would be an asset.
  • Physical ability to complete the manual labour related to constructing and maintaining sets; ability to lift 20-40kg (40-60 pounds) safely.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision as well as to establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • Problem solve, troubleshoot, and work collaboratively to find effective solutions.
  • Demonstrate proper and safe use of equipment in the performing arts and shop facilities.
  • Monitor the state of resources in a technical theatre setting, and to follow administrative procedures for the recommendation/requesting of necessary maintenance and/or upgrades.
  • Ability to interact professionally with various stakeholder groups and to support faculty and students, as needed.
  • Good working knowledge of ETC Lighting consoles, analogue and digital sound consoles, VectorWorks CAD, QLab and Isadora computer programs, rigging safety and procedures.
  • Analyse shop drawings in order to determine the cost of required supplies as well as source and order materials.
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Maintain and track budgets.
  • A valid B.C. Driver's license.
