Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Patient Care Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Operating Room plays a crucial role in delivering nursing care within a surgical setting. As an integral member of the surgical team, the LPN is responsible for a variety of nursing tasks that support complex surgical procedures. This includes collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective surgical practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts assessments, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care throughout the pre-operative, operative, and immediate post-operative phases.
- Engages in pre-operative evaluations to identify patient needs and collaborates with Registered Nurses and the surgical team to formulate care plans.
- Performs scrubbing duties, assisting the surgeon within the sterile field by passing instruments and materials during surgical operations.
- Assists in circulating duties, supporting the primary circulating nurse in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitors patients for any changes or unusual signs during procedures and promptly communicates with the RN.
- Maintains accurate documentation of patient care activities, ensuring thorough records are kept throughout the surgical process.
- Participates in staff meetings and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care delivery.
- Aids in the orientation and training of new staff members by demonstrating procedures and protocols.
- Engages in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices and technological advancements in the field.
- Performs clerical tasks such as managing communications and maintaining records as needed.
Qualifications
Candidates must have completed a recognized Practical Nursing program and possess current competencies in licensed practical nursing. Additional qualifications include graduation from an accredited Operating Room Program and at least one year of recent experience in acute care settings. Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN is required, along with current basic cardiac life support certification.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other emergency procedures.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Competence in prioritizing tasks and managing time efficiently.
- Capable of identifying patient learning needs and providing appropriate education.
